Stan by Eminem

This is my favorite Eminem song. It tells the story of a fan who writes to Eminem but doesn't get a response quick enough and kills himself. Stan, the person writing the letter to Eminem, talks about how he relates to Eminem's music and it helps him get through the day. I relate to almost everything Stan talks about to Em in his letters, besides some messed up stuff. I hope this song has helped other people as much it has helped me.

Heart of a Lion by KiD CuDi

This song is all about pushing forward and living your dreams. CuDi talks about how he kept his heart strong and didn't let anyone tell him what to do and became successful. He makes the point that perseverance is the key to success.

Three Little Birds by Bob Marley

Three Little Birds has a simple message but has a lot of feeling to it. Marley is talking about how beautiful things in nature helps relax the mind and do away with some of the stress of the day. I always listen to this song when things in my life get a little hectic.

Day 'N' Nite by KiD CuDi

This song is about someone who cannot rest at night. There are many things running through the person's head and he can't seem to sort out his priorities. He also talks of his loneliness and non-conformity.

Spaces We Leave Empty by Cathy Song

While I do not have a solid understanding of the meaning of this poem is was very well wrote. It uses a lot of imagery and personification. This is the first poem I do not understand but respectfully enjoyed.

Aunt Jennifer's Tigers by Adrienne Rich

This is a very abstract poem. I am afraid I do not follow this guy's thought process at all.

O CAPTAIN! MY CAPTAIN! by Walt Whitman

Walt Whitman wrote and recited this poem at Abraham Lincoln's funeral. It is a very powerful poem and was wrote for one of America's most influential presidents. This poem is an American classic.

Success is Counted Sweetest by Emily Dickinson

Emily Dickinson was probably the most prolific female poets of all time. This poem is about success and those who do not know what it is like to achieve it. Although the poem is difficult to understand I connect with it because we all fail some times.

A Fire-Truck by Richard Wilbur

Pretty obvious by the name of this poem it is about a fire-truck. The author does an amazing job painting the image of this gigantic fire truck steaming down the street rushing to a fire. I felt that the writing was well done and the imagery was amazing.

Love After Love by Derek Walcott

This poem is about finding love after you have lost love. Embrace the new love although the person may be a stranger you need to enjoy life. Get the most out of love you can because it won't be around forever. I found a lot of truth in this poem and can relate to it.

In a Gondola by Robert Browning

This poem was wrote in the 1800's so naturally I have no idea what the author is talking about. There is a lot of kissing going on though which is about the only word I understand. I probably won't be reading any more of his poems.

A Sunset of the City by Gwendolyn Brooks

I feel that the brunt of this poem is occurring right now. The poem goes through the swift change from warm summers to cold autumns. The negative mood from the poem puts me in an awkward mood.

The Haunted Palace

Once again a very disturbing poem. He talks about a beautiful mansion that grows old and decrepit. It's as if he's saying enjoy your youth because as you get older you deteriorate.

The Happiest Day by Edgar Allen Poe

This is the first uplifting Poe poem I have read. It's nice to see that he doesn't stick with the same dark tone. I feel inspired and ready to carry out my day after reading this poem.

Dreamland Edgar Allen Poe

This is a very peculiar poem. Most of Poe's writing is difficult to understand but always has a dark tone. Even in Poe's dreamland things are erie and somewhat evil.

To My Mother by Edgar Allen Poe

Everyone can relate to the message of this poem. It's simply about the relationship about mother and child.

The Raven by Edgar Allen Poe

This is probably one of the most famous poems of all time. Not to mention one of my favorite poems of all time. The story behind the poem is very dark and ominous. After reading it I find myself in an erie mood, but at the same time entertained. Poe really knows how to evoke human emotion.

I, Too by Langston Hughes

Another poem by Hughes about black repression. I like this poem because it is written in a prose and confident voice.

Children's Rhymes by Langston Hughes

In this poem Hughes makes reference to the Declaration of Independence. He mocks "Liberty and Justice to All". I thought this was a funny stab at the white man and probably took a lot of courage to write.

Bad Morning by Langston Hughes

I thought this poem was funny. The poem is only 4 lines long and barley makes sense. Although it does make a funny rhyme at the end.

As I Grew Older by Langston Hughes

Langston Hughes is known for writing about racial discrimination and civil rights. In this poem he talks about how his dreams are mounted behind a big wall, his race. He hopes that he can break through this wall eventually and achieve his goals.

April Rain Song by Langston Hughes

This poem is short but to the point. It talks of the gentleness of rain and it's tranquility. I too find rain very comforting, being that I fall asleep much easier when it is raining.
